Living Crafts: Winter 09 Giveaway

Last week , just before dinner time, I heard a knock on the door that I wasn’t expecting. It was a box of copies of Living Crafts Winter 09–with my name on the cover!

Now, I’ve had my work in many magazines but I don’t believe I’ve ever had my name on the cover– and this gave me quite a thrill. The editor of Living Crafts asked me to contribute a project a few months ago and I am so glad I made the time to squeeze it in, the entire process was so enjoyable–every magazine does things a little differently, but this was a true collaboration of ideas, which was fun. I designed another set of crocheted earrings (2 pair), and I have to admit that these are my favorites. I used Habu Textiles Stainless Steel yarn for these, which was awesome because it not only comes in lovely jeweled colors, but it has stainless steel mixed into the blend, which helps these earrings to keep their shape on their own. It’s also great because the yarn is teeeeeeny tiny! but if your hook happens to slip out as you are working, it holds the shape so you don’t lose your stitches as easily. (I’m knitting something with the leftover amounts, and it’s helpful for that, too!)

I also added some crystals to one of the pairs for extra sparkle and weight. I’m thrilled with how they came out and was actually pretty sad to send them away. I’m used to not keeping my projects, but I might make these again. They’re easy in terms of pattern, but they do require a bit of focus because, did I mention that the yarn is teeny tiny? Once you get the hang of them, though, you could easily make a dozen pairs to hand out as gifts.

The rest of the issue is packed with great projects for the holiday season, especially if you have young children in your family. There’s a great feature on ornament exchanges with several ornaments to make and give, and I love the sentiment behind the story–which shares the tradition of giving a set of ornaments to a new couple or baby. There are gorgeous holiday crowns, an extra special needle-felted advent calendar, a knitted child’s sweater and more.  What I love about this magazine is they don’t dumb it down– each craft is given space to breathe and they allow plenty of room  to explain each step. And– all kinds of fiber crafts are included- knitting, crochet, felting, sewing, embroidery and more.  I just get a warm feeling looking through the pages, the projects are truly heartfelt.

I’m giving away TWO copies of the mag to a couple of lucky blog readers. Leave me a comment with a few sentences about your favorite holiday traditions by Thursday, November 27th, 2009,  and I’ll draw names . If I don’t blog again before then, I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!

  • Congratulations - it looks like a great magazine. I think the idea from some commenters to give a Christmas ornament in kids stockings is great. Mine are too old now but I might try it for grandchildren one day. As for Christmas traditions - I have gone to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember and would hate to miss it, especially as I am in the choir! We also, always put chocolate coins and tangerines in the sockings.
  • Comgratulations, Linda! The earrings are awesome!
  • How cool...not sure I've ever seen this mag before so would love to get my hands on it!

Holiday traditions, hmmm...the one constant, through all of the ups and downs and deaths and births and tiny apartments and grandma's house: pies. Lots of them, and with the leftover crust bits, dough balls filled with butter and brown sugar.

Congrats on having your name on the cover Linda! The earrings look fun; I haven't tried crocheting any jewelry yet. One of my favorite holiday traditions is luring my older children who are out of the house back for latkes. That, and watching the little ones light the menorahs are my favorite holiday memories.
  • This looks like a great magazine but one which I certainly cannot get over here in the UK - boo hoo!! Well done on getting so much of your work published. This is a first time visit to your blog and I shall be back for sure!
One of our family traditions is on Christmas eve when I make a special tomato, orange and ginger soup with homemade potato bread rolls and we have special cheeses. This is all had by candlelight and is followed by a homemade dessert and coffee. When the children were at home we used to open our presents from one another after that and watch a film together - one of the great Christmas ones like Muppet Christmas Carol, You've Got Mail, While you were sleeping, Little Women etc. Now they are all fending for themselves I am grateful that our special meal still draws them back home together with boyfriends and this year a husband with one of them!! (I have four daughters!)
  • I adore this magazine and I think my head would explode if I ever saw my name on the cover! We don't have any traditions so I would love to start one - perhaps a candlelight family dinner where we're all sitting down at the same time - not running here and there!
  • Yay! I "blog know" a published author, with her name on the cover and all! :) My holiday tradition: when I was little, I used to make "holiday hats" for everyone at thanksgiving. We have a photo in an old family album with my 85 year old Irish grandfather, very dour and solemn as always, with a "pilgrim hat" stuck to his forehead with scotch tape.
  • Congratulations Linda! Those earrings are beautiful, and you've reminded me of my intention to subscribe to this magazine-- I have one issue and I loved it, but I keep forgetting.

When I was little, I must have been a sound sleeper because my mother would sneak into my room Christmas night while I was asleep and decorate my doll house for Christmas! I'd wake up and there'd be a little tree and presents in there, and little dollhouse boughs of holly, and always one or two new dollhouse things I'd have to hunt around in there to find. Whenever my girls are old enough for a doll house, I'd like to make it a tradition in our house too!

Congratulations on the magazine -- that's great! I crochet and make jewelry, and am currently trying to fuse the two together. Your patterns would help me get started.

I suppose my favorite holiday tradition is wrapping presents with my Dad. He always wraps presents very carefully, with lots of attention to detail. I think that's where I got my love of gift adornment.
  • COngrats Linda! Wonderful to see you in this magazine.
  • Every year, each kid got to pick out an ornament. With three kids in the family, we soon had more ornaments than could fit on the tree. So every year we'd all hang the ornaments on the tree, taking turns picking the ones we wanted on.

As each child moved out, my mother would go and pick out the child's ornaments and pack them up for us to hang on OUR tree.
  • As kids my brother and I got to open 1 Christmas gift on Christmas eve. I've carried on that tradition with my kids. About 3 years ago I started having the Christmas eve gift be a handmade gift that the kids could open. I love the handmade Christmas eve gift idea the most. Also every year in their stockings the kids get one Christmas ornament.

Congratulations! My favorite holiday tradition belongs to my husband's family. He and his two brothers each received an ornament every Christmas until they were married. Then, they took their box of ornaments to their new home for their own tree. It was a little bittersweet at the in-laws' when the last son's ornaments left for his new home. My husband and I now give each other an ornament every Christmas.
  • Piroska
My favourite holiday tradition is baking cookies, and a couple of years, my daughter and I even made gingerbread houses. It was loads of fun...frustrating...funny...and worth it all, in the end.
    :o)
  • I live in México, so we have mixed traditions, both local, european and american. At home, my personal favourite is lighting and adorning the christmas tree.
My father used to do it when we where little girls, and now my sister (in Wisconsin) and me (in Guadalajara) do it carefully each year).
If I get the mag, I'll give you my sister's adress, so you don't have get international shipping.
Oh, and your crochet is simply lovely! :D

I live 3,000 miles away from my hometown and family. Now with a family of my own, I find that I reflect more often on growing up and the sweet memories surrounding the holidays. We would always go to a Christmas Eve candlelight service, my mom would always bake crown roll, decorate the house just perfectly, and burn the au gratin potatoes. These are the childhood memories unique to my family that make me smile. It just goes to show you that it's not the perfectly planned things in the holiday season that I remember the most fondly, it's those unplanned moments of burnt potatoes that makes my family laugh with holiday joy the most! Everyone has those memories unique to their own family.

My favorite holiday tradition is the day (or sometimes two) that my brother and I get together to do (most of) our holdiday baking. We have our annual favorites, but he usually has found a few new recipes to try. Not only did he inherit my mother's talent for picking out good new recipes, he's an excellent baker and great company. It's a nice way to reconnect and spend some fun time together.
  • Hi there, Linda. I only found your blog recently but have really been enjoying it!

One of my Christmas holiday traditions is to take lots of photos of my grandchildren during the year but not show them to their Mums and Dads. At Christmas, I print them off and put them into albums as presents, and the Mums and Dads are always delighted. The photos bring back lots of memories of other occasions during the year, like trips out in Summer, Easter Egg hunts, and so on. As well as being very welcome presents, they cost very little money and are great fun to do.

We don't celebrate Thanksgiving (I wish we did!), but they would make lovely Thanksgiving presents, too!

So many traditions in my family and all are loved!
Christmas morning we would get up early and climb in bed with Mommy and Daddy to sing every carol we knew until they were ready to get up and start the day. My daughter and I have continued that except now it is us singing until we hear that the extended family visiting us wakes up (or the ones who's home we are staying at - we swap who has to travel ever other year). Advent calendars, cookie baking, sleeping under the tree the night it is first brought into the house, decorating with ornaments made and ones received as gifts thru the years... Oh, that is a good one too! We tie each ornament on the tree with a red ribbon. As each bow is tied we are tying up the challenges and our problems from the year. When we un-decorate the tree and untie the ribbons there is a fresh start to the new year.
  • Christina
My favorite holiday traditions is the elf on the shelf (you can find them at Borders and Hallmark.) And also eating lots of food with family.
  • My favourite tradition is on Xmas Eve we gather in the living room and tell the story of Jesus birth taking it and rein-acting the journey that Mary and Joseph took till Xmas day. Using felt made Kings, Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Shepherds and animals with my favorite knitted donkey, all of which I have made over the last 4years, building each year with more things. this year our 8 year old daughter will add her own hand made sewn felt bird, a swift which is also made for her Class play of St Francis of Assisi. We finish the evening with opening one special present we have made for each other, sing a Christmas song. This year we will also add going to the Christmas Carols before hand. We live in Australia and it seems strange or different to see all the "snow" added to the Christmas theme as we are usually experiencing full on heat. The Carols are held in the bush at the "Haven" in Castlecrag. It is always popular and you have to catch a community bus to go down there as no private cars are allowed as the streets are not wide and not to disturb residents. We feel we can add this this year as our daughter is a little older.
Thank you for your contribution to the magazine which is like a craft Bible to me and I so love. Merry Christmas to all

We usually have breakfast as a family on Christmas morning.
  • Amanda

    Thanks!

My favorite holiday tradition is making Christmas gifts. It has extended from family, to friends to work, this year we are having a jam exchange as our holiday gifts to each other.
  • We celebrated Thanksgiving with family friends and were relegated to the 'little girls' table until our late 20's. The only way this tradition ceased or hopefully paused is because we went and had families of our own.

I love all the food, especially the leftovers to make a fabulous turkey/stuffing/cranberry sandwich.

    Beautiful earrings!

I still love using the advent calendar... opening a door each day until the big day. One year I took a long red ribbon from the year prior. Cracked 13 walnuts in half. Created 25 little treats and surprises. (Many very simple) Placed the treat in the half walnut shell and glued them onto the ribbon making my own vertical advent calendar with no numbers. Perfect for the very young child. Simple fun!

I work at a bookstore (Powell's Books for Home and Garden in Portland), and had a chance to check out your book one day. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the earrings in there, and am excited to see more in Living Crafts.
Growing up, decorating was THE tradition, no matter what holiday we were celebrating. My mother is a child at heart, so the more decorations, the better, and my grandma uses her crochet hooks and glue gun to their greatest advantage, so new crafty decorations are never hard to come by. The tradition lives on at my house, even 3,000 miles from my family - my son shares his grandma's love of decoration, and he will even draw up plans for how to decorate, and what goes where!

That yarn sounds great, and so does your pattern. And I'm dying to eat some pumpkin pie. I don't think I will wait. Also, I made some brown butter last night and am going to make one of my favorite cookies today.
  • lisa luna
would love to check out the mag.
my favorite thing about the holidays is cooking all day on thanksgiving, while my husband and kids drag out the christmas decorations. we decorate & celebrate all day~
  • Laura
The day after Thanksgiving my husband & I and our two children take our local commuter train to a small town down the line. We get off at their cute little train station that is right in the middle of town & just across the street from a small square of shops. We don't come for the shopping although we do love looking into the shops, we come for the lighting of the big tree!! Starting in the late afternoon the high school choir begins to lead the crowd in Christmas Carols as we all drink cider & eat donuts provided by the town. Santa strolls the crowd greeting the children, an ice sculpture is often there creating beautiful works of art & as dark settles in the choir begins the Hallelujah Chorus & the entire square is lit with little white lights & most importantly the big tree!!!

We have done this for the past 5 years & my kids beginning talking about even before summer is over!! It is a wonderful start to our Advent season.

Wonderful earrings! Can't wait to get my Winter Issue -- love it! And I have not yet tried to crochet with Habu Textiles SS Yarn, but that will change soon! lol
    Christmas Traditions for us?
We also follow the "open one gift on Christmas Eve" tradition! And we always leave treats for Santa!
  • Wow, crocheting with stainless steel sounds interesting! Your earrings are lovely.

Ever since my oldest was little (she's 19 now), on Thanksgiving while the turkey was cooking in the oven, we would string popcorn and cranberries and hang them out on the trees for the birds. We would also spread peanut butter mixed with bird seed onto pinecones and hang them out too. If we happened to have some oranges on hand, we would cut them in half and run a string through then to hang on the trees. Our local birds always have a nice Thanksgiving feast!

  • Congrats! How cool is that?

We always take the kiddos to Church on Christmas Eve, and we always put a musical toothbrush in their stocking.
  • My new favorite tradition is making gifts with my girls. They are fiber artists like me and we are going to felt soap for gifts this year.
My second tradition is making sweet potato casserole for my husband's family. If I'm not coming I'd still better send the casserole!
