We interrupt this craft blog to let those of you reading who are in Bozeman know that Paul (my s.o.) will be back in Montana next week. He’s exhibiting his full collection of Main Street Drawings at the Story Mansion. In case you aren’t familiar with the project– basically, Paul decided that he was going to draw all of downtown Bozeman, along main street, block by block. And so every time it was warm enough to be outside, he went and drew and drew- through sunburns, snow, and even a wasp sting.

A lot of downtown has changed since Paul drew it- both in subtle and significant ways. The most notable change was the natural gas explosion that leveled the block with Boodles, Montana Trails Gallery and the American Legion (he had already drawn it in its entirety beforehand), but if you look close you’ll notice other things that have come and gone- snow melts, temporary construction passageways, and the Army/Navy store. Everyone who has been shown the sketchbook has some memory associated with a certain building downtown–whether from recent memory or when they were kids, and it is always so great to hear the stories.

I wanted to show you this partial one so you can see how he works. When he wasn’t able to complete one in a day (due to light changes, snow, etc) he’d come home with partial sketches. He didn’t lay anything out in pencil, just drew from left to right as he saw it.

I am really proud of Paul for completing the series, and excited for his show and talk. He’s going to be selling limited reproductions of all 26 pages in the first ever gallery show at the Story Mansion. This is also the first time all of the sketches will be on view. He’ll give an artist talk an do a sketchcrawl workshop, too. Here is the schedule of events.

Thursday, November 12
7:00pm to 9:00pm Opening of The Paul Heaston: Main Street at Story Mansion
Unfortunately I can’t make it back in town to celebrate (BOO!) but I hope you will go have a look and tell your friends about it. If you aren’t in town either, Paul also keeps a blog (Three Letter Word for Art) and has an Etsy shop. Go say hello!

There are ridiculous amounts of dandelions all over town–I love it. Here’s a pretty field we passed on a drive yesterday (it was about to storm)…

And here are my muddy feet from our hike today, with dandelions. We heard lots of thunder, so we ended up turning around when we were almost to the hard part (ie. huge elevation gain, and fast). But, we got a good 3 or so miles in anyway. By the way, it’s not a great idea to walk through mud in sandals, although I can’t say I didn’t enjoy myself. So much for my clean new Keens, not to mention my dirty toes.

And in Blatant Self Promotion news, I have an article in the newest issue of Make magazine. Woo-hoo, a real article! It’s about Montanan artist Gary Bates, and let me tell you it was hard to condense all of the information into 300 words.

You can’t read the text from my screenshot, but if you do a google search for him and the title (Earth Wind Inspire– HAH!) you can get to that page of the online edition. Or, of course, just check it out at the bookstore. They feature lots of neat techy projects.

Happy weekend!

Yesterday’s weather was gorgeous. I’m not quite understanding how the city can be blanketed in snow one day and70 degrees and sunny the next, but I’m not complaining! It really makes me appreciate the lovely days.

These are some of the leaves popping up around downtown. They are so pretty!! Most of them are already falling off in droves and rustling around the sidewalks and streets.

I also wandered across campus, where I passed these sidewalk stencils (at a sorority house, I believe), some juicy looking berries, and the duck ponds. The ducks are a little crazy- they all came traipsing over once I sat down to say hello. And begged for bread, of course.

I came back exhausted, but rejuvenated. I need to remember to go outside (for more than ten minutes) more often! More pics on flickr.

It’s already Fall, which became clear to me because of the color in the trees on the way to work. Right after I realized this, I heard on NPR that there would be snowshowers this weekend. This seemed unbelieveable as it was nearly 80 degrees on Friday. I woke up Saturday morning excited to peep out the window: nothing. There was snow in the mountains, but nothing on the ground. But later in the day, on the way back from the studio, there was snow(look closely), and more obviously, horses. They moved them to this pasture near the road, where I can see them all together.

This morning I insisted we hike, since yesterday was rainy (mostly shower, only slightly snow) and today was gorgeous. We didn’t stay long because there are always things to do, but I loved all of the colors in the leaves! I never feel like I get to observe enough, I could stand over plants and stare at horses through fences for hours.

After that, Paul went to the studio. I stayed home and cleaned up, then decided to cook him an early birthday meal (it’s tomorrow). I made baked breaded acorn squash, rosemary lemon chicken and a little spinach salad. It was delicious! And there is squash leftover. I love fall, with all of it’s oddly shaped gourds. I definitely need to make something with pumpkin soon.

P.S. If you are participating in the Patchwork Swap, you should have received an email from me by now. If you didn’t, please email me to let me know.
